Mysore is the leader in the world when it comes to producing Handicrafts. A visit to either Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium on Sayyaji Rao Road or the Ramsons’s Handicrafts showroom near the zoo gardens will testify to the quality and the range of products that the city has to deliver.
The world famous Mysore Silk famous for its sensuous feeling gets manufactured in its plant at Mysore. Mysore & Bangalore account for more than 60% of the incense stick manufacture & export with leaders like N. Ranga Rao & Sons, Vasu Agarbathis & Aravinda Parimala Works situated in the city along with 20-25 more units.
The largest exporter & manufacturer of Beedies, Mangalore Ganesh beedies has their head office at Mysore.
The earlier existence of the motorcycle mfg. co. Ideal Jawa Pvt. Ltd. attracted a host of ancillary industries and nurtured a skilled workforce. Capitalising on this environment, industries like BEML, TVS industries, Automobile Axles, Rane Madras, L.G. Balakrishnan & Co. Amalgamations Repco &India Pistons Repco have set up shop. The investments made by the first three of them at Mysore in the production capacities is ample proof of the city’s capabilities in providing a suitable climate and skilled workforce for automobile companies to set up shop.
Central Government research institutions, the CFTRI and DFRL situated at Mysore have been able to provide technological support to a number of small - scale industries in the food-related sector. Complementing this are the big names in the industry like Nestle, Hindustan Levers, Godrej Foods,Jagdale Group etc. which have considerable manufacturing capacities at Mysore.
Mysore has also been able to attract pharma majors like Reckitt Benckiser, Jubilant Organosys etc. Household brands like Crocin, Dispirin etc. are manufactured at their base in Mysore. The advent of ‘Reid & Taylor’s huge manufacturing base has catapulted Mysore into a small Manchester.
J.K.Tyres & Dunlop with a considerable investment on tyre manufacturing units have provided a good impetus to industrial growth.
